After a hiatus of more than two years from daily soaps, Mohit Malik is back with Kullfi Kumar Baajewala. It is the Hindi remake of the superhit Bengali daily, Potol Kumar Gaanwala. The show was a slow starter but has cemented its place as one of the top ten shows on the BARC charts. People are loving the performances by the main lead, Aakriti Sharma and Mohit, who plays an emotionally troubled rock-star, Sikander Singh Gill. His last outing was that of the evil and abusive Samrat Singh Rathore in Doli Armanon Ki and people are surprised how he has managed to transform into the troubled rock-star. Bollywood Life caught up with Mohit for an interview. Excerpts from an interview….

On his long break from TV
“I am a very choosy actor. I live with a role and character. I did not want to take up anything where I did get bored and start compromising on my craft. I am very particular about this. I had signed a couple of shows, one with Life Ok and another with Rajan Shahi, Yaariyaan, which I was very excited about. However, the projects did not take off. I hosted Savdhaan India in between. I really want to keep working as an actor but I cannot take up roles that don’t convince me. Playing a father onscreen
It is not that tough. I love kids, especially little girls. In fact, I wish to be a daddy to a little girl when I become a parent. In real life, I am close to my nephew and niece. On the show, Sikander is a father who does not live with his kid. He has not been a good father per se. He is not experienced when it comes to upbringing. We did not want a perfect father type on the show. The fact that I am inexperienced helps.

On team Kullfi Kumar Bajewala
A show is all about team effort. This is not a typical soap. KKB is all about characters. This ensemble of good actors has really helped the show. I knew Anjali Anand beforehand. So far, I have been lucky to work with some friendly teams. Chemistry is all about being comfortable and I have that with Aakriti and Anjali. I have always made an effort to gel well with my co-actors. There is like-mindedness in the team. I am dying to do scenes where I meet Kullfi and our bond starts building. The musician in Mohit
I love music. As a kid, I could play the casio and keyboards really well without actually learning them. Sur ki samajh hamesha thi. I am doing Riyaaz so that I can sing on the show in my own voice in a couple of months. I have promised them. Moreover, I did workshops to get the Punjabi dialect used in Chandigarh. I am a Delhi Punjabi and do not speak like that.

Playing a rock-star
Yes, TV is full of rock-stars but Sikander is different. It is not the clichéd projection of a rock-star. We are focusing on the human being, his guilt, anxieties and fears. It is different and a lot tougher. It focuses on what is happening in his personal life.

Surviving competition
Why will it bother me? I don’t take anything seriously. In my break, I set up my businesses. I love to travel with my wife and spend time with my family. My competition is with myself. If you see my graph, few people have done such diverse roles. I will get whatever is destined for me. My hard work will never stop. I was doing acting workshops with Atul Mongia. He is my guru now. I worked on my shortcomings to hone my craft. I could play Sikander because of my training.

Teaming up with Gul Khan
I have worked with Gul Khan before on Suvreen Guggal. We have wanted to work together for a long time. In fact, we were supposed to do a show after Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. She is a lovely creative person and just a call away. She is very much involved in all aspects of a show. Both Gul and Nilanjana are lovely producers.
