Priyanka Chopra is the daughter of the Late Capt. Dr. Ashok Chopra and Dr. Madhu Chopra. She was born in Jamshedpur and spent most of her childhood in Bareilly as well as in Lucknow. The family moved frequently since her father was a doctor in the Indian Army. Priyanka subsequently relocated to the U.S. for higher studies. When she returned to India in the year 2000, she enrolled in college but soon dropped out when she participated and won the Miss India pageant. She was also crowned Miss World in the same year. She initially aspired to study engineering or psychiatry but soon changed her mind and decided to accept offers for films that came to her from the Indian film industry. She made her debut in the Tamil film Thamizhan (2002) and in Bollywood with The Hero: Love Story of a Spy (2003). By 2006, Chopra had established herself as a leading actress of Hindi cinema. After receiving mixed reviews for a series of unsuccessful films, she received critical acclaim for her versatility in portraying a range of unconventional characters, including a troubled model in the 2008 drama Fashion, a feisty Marathi woman in the 2009 thriller Kaminey, a serial killer in Saat Khoon Maaf (2011) and an autistic woman in the romantic comedy Barfi (2012). She starred in Don 2 (2011), Agneepath (2012) and Krrish 3 (2013). In addition to acting in films, she participates in stage shows, has hosted a reality show on television and has written columns for India’s national newspapers. Chopra has engaged in philanthropic activities, and was appointed as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Child Rights in 2010. She is also a trained singer and leaped into the music industry with her debut single In My City. Her second single Exotic was out in 2013 and also featured international pop sensation Pitbull. Her highly publicised dance in the 2013 Blockbuster Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela was greatly appreciated. She also starred in Gunday (2014) which was accepted by both the critics as well as the audience. She was last seen in the hugely anticipated biopic, Mary Kom (2014), which is based on the life and struggles of champion boxer MC Mary Kom, the family drama film, Dil Dhadakne Do (2015) and Bajirao Mastani (2015). Her next film Jai Gangaajal, in which she plays the role of a policewoman, will hit theatres in March, 2016. Apart from working with internationally proclaimed stars such as Pitbull and The Chain Smokers, She has also lent her voice to the Hollywood Flick, Disney’s ‘Planes’. Priyanka Chopra is the only Indian actress to have cast her foot impression at the prestigious Ferragamo museum in Florence, Italy.
