Movies featuring high octane action sequences shot stylishly have been a favorite of many film enthusiasts. Majority of action movies perform really well at the ticket-window, making investors happy. In 2016, there were many actioners like ‘Sultan’, ‘Force 2’, ‘Baaghi’ and ‘Shivaay’, which inflamed the box office. But unlike last year, 2017 has more action films scheduled to release throughout the year. Let’s have a look at the most anticipated action movies of 2017.

10) The Ghazi Attack (24 February)
We have seen many Hindi films based on various wars our powerful armies have fought over the years, but ‘The Ghazi Attack’ is completely different from all of them. The film shows war not on earth but hundreds of feet under water. Sounds new and interesting? Doesn’t it? Touted to be India’s first war at sea film, ‘The Ghazi Attack’ is said to have everything to keep you hooked to your seats. It boasts of a strong story, great performances, and excellent direction. The story of the movie is going to be thoroughly engaging, if celebs who have watched the film are to be believed. The movie is set to release on 17th February, 2017.

The story of ‘The Ghazi Attack’ revolves around Indian submarine, S 21 – INS Rajput and a team of Indian Navy Officers, Captain Ranvijay Singh (Kay Kay Menon), Lieutenant Arjun Verma (Rana Daggubati) and Officer (Devraj Atul Kulkarni), who have been entrusted with the responsibility of carrying out a recce mission in Bay Of Bengal to find out the presence of Pakistani Naval Army after a secret intelligence report suggesting the same. The team does not only trace the enemy army but defeats them also. How S 21 fights with the colossal Ghazi submarine of Pakistan braving all odds and comes out victorious is what forms the crux of the story.
Making a film within the confines of a submarine and keeping it engaging and interesting throughout is not an easy task, but debutant director Sankalp Reddy seems to have made impossible possible. If the trailer of the movie is anything to go by, the director has kept the film tight while maintaining fluency interesting enough to keep the audience hooked to the screens. The casting of the film is spot on. All artistes, including Rana Daggubati, Kay Kay Menon and Atul Kulkarni, are known to put their heart and soul in portraying their characters. Kay Kay Menon as Captain Ranvijay Singh looks perfect in posters and trailer. Rana Daggubati too fits the bill. He looks amazing in the Navy uniform. Atul Kulkarni also lends an incredible support to the film. As officer Devraj he is brilliant. Despite being made on a moderate budget, the production value of the film seems quite rich.

TRIVIA: The film is simultaneously made in Telugu and Hindi and will be dubbed in Tamil. Amitabh Bachchan lent his voice for the Hindi version of the film while Chiranjeevi for the Telugu version.
9) Rangoon (24 February)

Starring Kangana Ranaut, Saif Ali Khan and Shahid Kapoor in important roles, ‘Rangoon’ is one of the most anticipated action movies of 2017. All three superstars, who feature in the star cast of movie, boast of a huge fan following, which will ensure excellent footfalls when the film hits theaters. Besides the trio of Kangana, Saif and Shahid, filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj is another important factor which makes ‘Rangoon’ a must watch for movie enthusiasts all over the world. Vishal is considered as one of the best filmmakers from the current generation of filmmakers. Most of his previous films have worked well with the audience. His popularity as a movie maven can be gauged by the fact that Indian audience waits for his movies with bated breath simply because they have a perfect blend of strong narratives, sterling performances and excellent direction. ‘Rangoon’ seems to be another masterpiece coming from the prolific repertoire of the director. Produced under the banners of VB Films, Nadiadwala Grandsons Entertainments and Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, the much awaited movie releases nationwide on 24th February.

Talking about the story, ‘Rangoon’ is a period film set against the backdrop of World War II (1939-1945). It is a love triangle full of passion, intensity and enmity. The film is loosely inspired by Mary Ann Evans aka Fearless Nadia, the first original stunt-woman of Bollywood who was a name to reckon with way back in 40’s. Kangana essays the lead character of Julia. Julia is an actress and stunt-woman, also famous for her breathtaking dance moves. She is in love with a renowned producer, Rustom (Saif Ali Khan). But once she is sent to the war front to regale and entertain soldiers fighting in World War II, she fell in love once again with a military man Havildar Nawab Malik (Shahid Kapoor). To know how the story unfolds further, you can watch the film in cinemas near you.
‘Rangoon’ marks the third collaboration between Vishal Bhardwaj and Shahid Kapoor. Both have previously worked together on two successful ventures, ‘Kaminey (2009) and ‘Haider’ (2014). The film also brings Vishal Bhardwaj and Saif Ali Khan together after a big gap of 11 years. Both did ‘Omkara’ together in 2006. Kangana Ranaut, Saif Ali Khan and Shahid Kapoor are working together for the first time on any film.

TRIVIA: Initially, Shahid Kapoor was to play the character of a Sikh man but the role was later changed.
8) Commando 2 (3 March)
As the name suggests itself, ‘Commando 2’ is a forthcoming Indian action movie featuring the latest action star Vidyut Jamwal along with an impressive lineup of actors such as Adah Sharma, Esha Gupta, Shefali Shah, Freddy Daruwala, Adil Hussain and Thakur Anoop Singh. Directed by Deven Bhojani, the film is a sequel to the 2013 movie ‘Commando’, which was a sleeper hit at the domestic box office. To cash on the popularity of the movie, the makers decided to turn it into a film franchise and soon announced its second installment in the year 2015. The principal photography of the movie started on 17 Feb 2016 and the film was ready to by the end of the year. The trailer of the movie was unveiled a couple of days back, which piqued the audiences’ interest to manifolds. Like its predecessor, ‘Commando 2’ too seems high on action and thriller. It is one of the most anticipated action movies of 2017, which is slated to arrive in cinemas on 3 March.

Produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah and distributed by Reliance Entertainment, ‘Commando 2’ was earlier scheduled to hit screens on January 6, 2017. But the makers pushed the release date of the movie to March 3 due to the demonetization move taken by Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, which rendered high value currency of Rs. 500 and Rs. 100 unacceptable and worthless. Fearing that the move might affect the box office earning of the movie, the makers moved it to 3rd March.
TRIVIA: Director Deven Bhojani had earlier directed the cult comedy show, ‘Sarabhai v/s Sarabhai’.
7) Naam Shabana (31 March)
‘Naam Shabana’ is one of the most anticipated action movies of 2017. The official trailer of the Taapsee Pannu starrer much awaited movie was released recently. Within a few hours of its official launch, the trailer took the social media by storm as it was trending all over. Everyone praised Taapsee’s feiry and determined look in the movie. The trailer makes it more than clear that action is going to be galore in the film. The movie is slated to arrive in cinemas nationwide on 31st March.

‘Naam Shabana’ seems high on action and suspense. Reportedly, Taapsee trained herself intensively and learnt mixed martial arts and Aikido along with continuing to train in Krav Maga for the film. The actress will be seen doing some power-packed action stunts in the movie, which is quite conspicuous by the trailer. Taapsee plays the role of an undercover agent in the movie, who has been trained for a secret mission. What her secret mission is, will be revealed only after the release of the film.
‘Naam Shabana’ is directed by Shivam Nair and produced by Neeraj Pandey under Friday Filmworks, Plan C Studios, Kriarj Entertainment and Cape Of Good Films banners.The action spy thriller film is a prequel to Taapsee’s character from the 2015 film ‘Baby’, which had Akshay Kumar in the lead. It is also interesting to note that Akshay is the common factor in both movies. In ‘Naam Shabana’, the hit actor will be seen in a special cameo. The movie also stars Manoj Bajpayee, Anupam Kher, Danny Denzongpa and South star Prithviraj in prominent roles. TRIVIA: The official announcement of the film was announced in the first half of September 2016.

6) Baahubali: The Conclusion (28 April)
If you ask someone which is the movie they are dying to watch in 2017, the name: of ‘Baahubali: The Conclusion’, in all likelihood, will be there on the tip of their tongues. The second part of ‘Baahubali: The Beginning’ is one of the most anticipated action movies of 2017 without an ounce of doubt. The film is expected to have everything from nail biting suspense to opulent sets to world-class action sequences. In nutshell, one more film is waiting to write its name in the list of Indian cinema’s biggest box office blockbusters. The audience is waiting for the movie with bated breath because everyone wants to know that why Kattapa killed Baahubali. If you too want to know the answer, then wait for the film to hit screens on 28th April, 2017.
‘Baahubali: The Conclusion’ is not a Hindi film, even then people are eagerly awaiting its release. The first part of the visually delightful film had quite successfully blurred the various barriers of language. The same is expected from its second installment also. When the dubbed version of its predecessor, ‘Baahubali: The Beginning’, released on 10th July 2015 by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, no one had thought the epic historical drama would do such a tremendous business in Hindi belts. But with the help of a strong story, exceptional performances and outstanding direction, the film turned out to be a blockbuster in Hindi speaking regions also. Besides India, the film did excellent business in international markets also.
If the buzz around ‘Baahubali: The Conclusion’ is an indication, the extravagant movie is going to rock the box office upon its release. It is expected to open massively in India and abroad. Actors like Prabhas, Anushka Shetty, Rana Daggubati and Tamannah Bhatia have become household names now. Their increasing popularity in Hindi domains will also help the film in a big way. Rest, the name of S.S Rajamouli will do the talking.

TRIVIA: According to reports, the climax of ‘Baahubali: The Conclusion’ has been shot on a budget of Rs 30 crore which is double the amount of its prequel’s climax shoot.
5) Tubelight (26 June)
Like many past years, the auspicious festival of Eid is going to be even special this year. Aren’t you curious to know why? Oh ho… Don’t you know that India’s most loved Bhaijaan, Salman Khan, is coming up with his latest film ‘Tubelight’, which is slated to hit theaters on 26th June, 2017? If you didn’t know, now you know. So, mark the date and get set to see an out and out actioner in June. Directed by well-known filmmaker Kabir Khan, the movie has been in the news ever since it was officially announced in 2016. Touted to be one of the most anticipated action movies of 2017, ‘Tubelight’ is going to be another massive hit by Salman who has taken the box office by storm with most of his last releases.

‘Tubelight’ is a historical war drama set against the backdrop of 1962 Sino-Indian war. The film basically is about love from across the borders during the time of war. Aside from an avalanche of emotions, the movie will also be high on action. Besides Salman Khan, the film also features his younger brother, Sohail Khan, and beautiful Chinese actress Zhu Zhu, who will be making her Bollywood debut with the movie. But the most exciting and thrilling part of the movie is that megastar Shah Rukh Khan will also be seen in an extended cameo in it. Salman and Shah Rukh are the biggest stars of Bollywood. They have not worked together in any movie since the 2002 film ‘Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam’, which featured Madhuri Dixit as the female lead. But wait for few months and you can feast your eyes with these two megastars in the same frame. It’s going to be a moment worth waiting. Isn’t?
Tubelight’ marks the third collaboration between Salman Khan and Kabir Khan. The terrific combo of the two is expected to do wonder this time also. Both have previously delivered two biggest blockbusters of recent time – ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ (2012) and the National award winning movie ‘Bajrangi Bhaaijan’ (2015). Their third outing also has everything to inflame the box office.

TRIVIA: Reportedly, ‘Tubelight’ is not based on an original script but is actually a remake of the 2015 Hollywood film ‘Little Boy’.
4) Baadshaho (1 September)
Featuring an ensemble star cast of Ajay Devgn, Emraan Hashmi, Vidyut Jammwal, Esha Gupta and Ileana D’Cruz in the principal roles, ‘Baadshaho’ is one of the most anticipated action films of 2017. Earlier, the names of Kareena Kapoor Khan, Shruti Haasan and Priyanka Chopra were also speculated to play the female lead opposite Ajay Devgn, but none of the actresses could make it to the final list. Sunny Leone has also been roped in for special appearance in a song. The last leg of the shooting is currently underway in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. The film will hit screens on September 1st, 2017.

Directed by noted filmmaker Milan Luthria on a story written by Rajat Arora, the action film has been long in the making. The film went on floors in Jan 2015 and principal photography commenced in August 2016 in Mumbai. But due to some unforeseeable circumstances, the shoot of the movie halted at several occasions. The makers earlier announced their worldwide release date as 26 January 2017. But later upon the request from producers Farhan Akhtar and Rakesh Roshan of the films ‘Raees’ and ‘Kaabil’ respectively, Bhushan Kumar, who is co-producing the film along with Milan Luthria and Krishan Kumar, decided to move the release date to May 12, 2017. Later in early December 2016, Ajay announced the new release date as 1 September 2017.
TRIVIA: ‘Baadshaho’ marks the fourth collaboration between Ajay Devgn and Milan Luthria. Both have previously delivered Kachche Dhaage (1999), Chori Chori (2003) and Once Upon a Time in Mumbai (2010).
3) 2.0

‘2.0’ is a casting coup of sort. It is a helluva film, which the entire nation is waiting for with a lot of excitement and thrill. Starring two biggest superstars of Indian cinema – Thalaiva Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar, the science fiction film is a sequel to the 2010 Tamil film ‘Enthiran’ (Robot in Hindi). After the earth-shattering success of the first part, the makers decided to come up with its second installment which would be bigger and better in scale and grandeur. So, finally, after a gap of good seven years, Rajinikanth is be back to entertain the audience with his sci-fi movie.

Written and directed by S. Shankar and produced by Subaskaran Allirajah under the banner of Lyca Productions, ‘2.0’ will see Rajinikanth reprising the roles of Dr. Vaseegaran and Chitti from its predecessor. The cast of the film gets even bigger with Akshay Kumar and Amy Jackson joining the forces. On November 20th, the first look of the much awaited flick was unveiled at a grand ceremony in Mumbai. The glitzy event, which was organized at the budget of Rs 6 crore, saw the presence of a host of celebrities from Bollywood and Kollywood, who gathered to catch the first look of the movie.
Touted to be the biggest action movie of the year, ‘2.0’ boasts of some jaw-dropping action sequences which the audience has never seen before in any Indian film. Reportedly, a team of highly talented action choreographers, which includes Hollywood stunt directors Kenny Bates (Transformers), Aaron Crippen (Batman v Superman) and Steve Griffin, has been hired to work on the action of the movie. They are working tirelessly to bring out a product that could match up to Hollywood standards. Made on a massive budget of Rs. 350 crore, ‘2.0’ is said to be the costliest film ever made in India. It is ready to come out on 18th October, on the auspicious occasion of Diwali. The film will be simultaneously released in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.

TRIVIA: Amy Jackson, who plays the female lead in the movie, had recommended Akshay Kumar’s name to the makers. She had worked with the actor in the comedy film ‘Singh Is Bling’ (2015). 2) Kaabil (25 January) It seems that the stars of superstar Hrithik Roshan are not shining bright these days. In 2016, the brilliant actor came up with only one film – ‘Mohenjo Daro’ – and that too turned out to be the biggest disaster of his acting career. Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, the film clashed with Akshay Kumar’s much publicized ‘Rustom’ and fell flat due to an incomprehensible plot and average performances. Now, the Greek God of Bollywood is looking forward to the release of his forthcoming film ‘Kaabil’ with sky high expectations. If the trailer of the movie is anything to go by, the film has all the ingredients that can make it the biggest success of his career. Also featuring Yami Gautam, Rohit Roy and Ronit Roy in principal roles, ‘Kaabil’ is counted amongst one of the most anticipated action movies of 2013. It is scheduled to release in cinemas on 25th January, 2017.
‘Kaabil’ tells the story of a blind man named Rohan (Hrithik Roshan). Innocent and sweet-natured Rohan meets Supriya (Yami Gautam) on a date fixed by a friend. Supriya is also blind like Rohan. Both like each other and decide to get married. But soon the couple comes across the biggest tragedy of their lives when Supriya is raped twice by a local goon Amit Shelar (Rohit Roy) and his friend. Not able to come terms with the tragedy which befell her, Supriya commits suicide, leaving Roshan shattered and revengeful. Now, how Rohan takes his revenge from Amit and his brother Madhav Shelar (Ronit Roy), with the help of a police officer, is what unfolds further in the story.
Directed by Sanjay Gupta, who is known for making gangster films like ‘Kaante’ (2002), ‘Musafir’ (2004) and ‘Shootout at Lokhandwala’ to name a couple of few, ‘Kaabil’ is expected to bring Hrithik Roshan’s career back on track after the colossal failure of his last release, ‘Mohenjo Daro’. The film has been produced by Hrithik’s father and renowned filmmaker, Rakesh Roshan. Senior Roshan is known for blending emotions and action in a fine balance in his films. If he has done the same with his latest production also, then it is expected that ‘Kaabil’ will have ample doses of action and emotion.

TRIVIA: The film is all set to clash with the Shah Rukh Khan starrer ‘Raees’ at the box office and is known as biggest box office clash of recent times on 25th January 2017. ‘Kaabil’ releases across 2700 screens whereas ‘Raees’ opens in 3500 screens.
1) Raees (25 January)
Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Pakistani actress Mahira Khan in pivotal roles, ‘Raees’ is an upcoming action, crime, thriller movie which is said to be loosely inspired by the life of a Gujarat based criminal named Abdul Latif. However, the makers have denied all such reports saying that the movie is a pure work of fiction, not based on any person living or dead. Whether the film is inspired by somebody or not, the audience will get to know once the film enters cinema halls on 25th January, 2017.

Talking about the story of the film, ‘Raees’ revolves around a bootlegger named Raees. A man, who once belonged to a humble background, now makes a killing by smuggling. He has his own set of principles which he follows to a tee, no matter what. But they say success brings along more foes than friends. The same happens with Raees also. As he grows powerful and influential, he makes a lot of enemies and rivals in the way. One incident changes his life forever, which forces him to act against his principle.
Directed by Rahul Dholakia and produced by Gauri Khan, Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidwani, ‘Raees’ has been in the news since long. The film was earlier schedule to clash with Salman Khan’s ‘Sultan’ on Eid, 2016. But due to it not being completed within the stipulated timeframe, the release of the film had to push forward to January, 2017.

TRIVIA: After Farhan Akhtar decided to quit the movie, he approached Fardeen Khan to come onboard. But the actor turned down the offer saying he was on a break and would make a comeback in a home production only. That is when Nawazuddin Siddiqui was roped in to play the role of IPS Jaideep Ambalal Majmudar in the movie.
