Secret #1: Love for fitness

Varun was an athlete during his school days, and that required him to work hard to increase his stamina. He did so by swimming all through his school years, literally. He swims even now if he has time on hand.

“I still swim regularly, even if it’s for 15 minutes. I also play cricket and squash to improve my agility. I have come to realise that filling your day with various activities keeps your weight in place. I rely on the Nike Fuel Band that tracks how much, how often, and how intensely you move. If you need abs, workouts are necessary because any sport cuts down the fat. Sports are great for the mind too and keep it active.”

Secret #2: Never forget to warm up

First rule for anyone who is set to start working out is, a 10-15 minutes warm up routine. This includes, jogging, jumping, running, or stretching exercises of chest and shoulder. If you do not do so, you are likely to injure yourself and upset your plans of sporting a fit body.

‘I do a mix and match of many exercises. But before anything I do, I go for a warm up as it of prime importance.”
In fact, he had injured his hip bone during an action sequence while shooting for Main Tera Hero, and he blames ‘not warming up’ before the shot for that incident.

Secret #3: Combination workout

Varun gets his training from the celebrity trainer, Prashant Sawant, who also trains Shah Rukh Khan and Ajay Devgn. He trains for five days a week for 90 minutes, and his trainer mixes various routines (from martial arts and weightlifting to heavy-duty cardio) to eliminate any chances of him getting bored of the routine.

While weightlifting helps him tone his body and bulk up whenever the script demands it, he suggests his fans to aim towards having a flexible body.

“Rather than focusing on huge and bulked up body, aim to acquire limber body. As you grow older, the natural suppleness of body begins getting down, as a result of which you become vulnerable to injuries. A lithe body not only looks influential, it is powerful too.”
He also does yoga as it is great for holistic growth. But, he skips it on the days when he is short of time.

Secret #4: Listen to your body

“Applying ice to sore muscles helps. Also, when I hit the gym, I wear a safety belt. It cushions my spine. I also enjoy a body massage. It’s a great therapy for the muscles.”

Secret #5: Healthy diet

Coming from a family that has history of diabetes, Varun makes sure that he never compromises on what he eats. And, here are the dos and don’ts that the actor follows:

He stays away from high-salt, high-sugar and oily food items.
He never eats carbs at night. And, if he does, he makes sure they have a low glycaemic index, so that it does not lead to sugar rush in his body.
He eats small meals every two to three hours and drinks five to six litres of water every day.
He snacks on lotus seeds, papayas, protein smoothies and bananas.

Breakfast: He prefers omelette, and whole wheat sandwich, and oat chilla.
Lunch: It is usually brown rice, three chapattis, baked chicken, broccoli and other green vegetables.
Dinner: He loves to binge on salad with fish, and green tea.
“Eat what your mother tells you. But not always, because some mothers will prescribe buttermilk, parathas with ghee, etc.’ On a serious note, don’t eat too much carbs at night. That is something I follow.”

Secret #6: Keep yourself motivated

As it is not easy to stay motivated to exercise on a regular basis, here is what keeps Varun charged up all the time. He relies on his trainer, Prashant, for his motivation.
“Prashant knows how to motivate me. He applies reverse psychology. When I feel tired and low he shows me my old pictures. He tells me how great my body looked six months ago and that what I have now is also okay though not as great. That stimulates me instantly to work harder.”
